The Holy Grail War

A ritual to bring about the descent of the Holy Grail, an omnipotent container capable of granting any wish to whomever claims it. Under the supervision of the Church and the Mage’s Association, the seven Mages (Masters) summon seven Heroic Spirits (Servants), after which they engage in a battle royale until only one is left standing.
This story begins with the manifestation of a fabricated Holy Grail War that mimics a proper Holy Grail War.

Servant

Special familiars summoned by Mages (Master) during Holy Grail Wars. Heroes worshipped in mythology and legends, they materialize in their past peak form, thanks to the power of the Holy Grail. One from each of the seven classes of Servants—Saber, Archer, Lancer, Rider, Caster, Assassin, and Berserker—is summoned, and each possesses a powerful Noble Phantasm. Servants comply with being summoned in order to have their own wishes granted, and it is for that purpose that they fight alongside their Masters.

Master

Mages qualified to form a contract with Heroic Spirits (Servants). Masters selected by the Holy Grail receive a mark called a Command Spell on their hands, and they gain absolute authority over Servants.

Command Spell

The absolute authority over Servants granted by the Holy Grail to mages (Masters) taking part in the Holy Grail War. Aside from giving Masters the power to order Servants to take certain action—whether they want to or not—up to three times, Command Spells can also be used to enhance a Servant’s abilities or magical energy. Once a Master has exhausted or lost all of his/her Command Spells, he/she loses the right to participate in the Holy Grail War.

Holy Grail

An omnipotent vessel said to grant any wish. In the Holy Grail War, the Holy Grail is a wish-granting device bestowed upon the Master and Servant who are victorious to the very end. This is what is commonly known as the “Fuyuki Holy Grail.” When tracing its origins, it is said to be the highest-ranked holy relic, the “cup that received the blood of God.” However, the Holy Grail that descends during a Holy Grail War has been confirmed to be something entirely different from such a true holy relic. Even so, setting aside questions of authenticity, the Fuyuki Holy Grail can be called an existence beyond all standards, as it gives tangible form to a portion of the miracle known as the “summoning of Servants.” The Holy Grail of Snowfield is an imitation of the Fuyuki Holy Grail from the Third Holy Grail War, created through the collusion of the United States government and a faction of mages, including Faldeus. On the stage built by this false Holy Grail, who will be summoned, how they will dance, and what will ultimately be born from it…no one yet knows.

The Holy Church

An organization tasked with eliminating all forms of heresy and properly managing Mystics that lie beyond human control. Though it stands in opposition to the Mage’s Association, to which mages belong, the Holy Church customarily dispatches an overseer during a Holy Grail War to maintain a neutral and impartial stance in the conflict between mages.
Among its members are combat operatives known as Executors. Rather than merely exorcising magical beings, evil spirits, Dead Apostles, and other entities the Church declares “must not exist in this world,” they act as agents of God’s power and judgment, utterly eradicating their targets. They are a militant faction through and through, trusted as the Church’s most formidable operatives.
Naturally, because this role involves confronting beings far beyond the ordinary, it is a post reserved for only the most exceptional individuals within the Church.

Dead Apostles

In this world, there exist beings known as vampires. They are divided into those who are vampires from birth, called True Ancestors, and those who were originally human but became vampires through some means, such as having their blood drained by one of the former. The latter are known as Dead Apostles.
Among them are individuals who became Dead Apostles after being fed upon by other Dead Apostles, as well as those who deliberately transformed themselves into Dead Apostles after pursuing magecraft to its extreme. Their abilities, which surpass those of humans, are nevertheless only an extension of human potential. Freed from the constraint of lifespan, they gained their abilities only after the passage of countless years. In other words, if humans were to possess lifespans measured in thousands of years, anyone could theoretically attain equivalent abilities.
Heroic Spirits are shadows cast by human history, born from humanity’s affirmation of the order of the human world. In contrast, Dead Apostles can be described as shadows cast by the Earth, born from the denial of the human world. Because of this, Dead Apostles are able to negate the protection of Noble Phantasms created by humans, as well as those forged by gods for the sake of humanity.
Defeating them requires powers different from those of Servants, such as specially consecrated weapons, Mystic Eyes, or individuals who possess singularities like Demonic Beasts.

Heroes Bearing the Blood of Gods

High-ranking beings who once appeared in myths and legends as gods but have since lost their corporeal form and merged with nature are called “Divine Spirits.” Compared to the Heroic Spirits engraved in human history, they occupy a higher plane of existence, and it is generally said that they cannot be summoned in a Holy Grail War.
Yet there are exceptions—Servants who possess powers akin to those of gods. One such exception is the heroes bearing divine blood: demigod Heroic Spirits born from the union of a god and a human in the distant age of mythology.
For example, Gilgamesh was born of Lugalbanda, a king who reigned two generations earlier, and the ancient goddess Rimat; thus, he can be described as a demigod, two-thirds divine and one-third human. Likewise, the great hero Heracles of Greek mythology was born of the chief god Zeus and a mortal woman, embodying the union of god and human.
These heroes bearing the blood of gods are often shrouded in a divine aura, and many wield Noble Phantasms bestowed upon them by the gods themselves. For this reason, they are considered far stronger than ordinary Heroic Spirits, standing apart as a class of exceptional power.

Extra Class

Heroic Spirits summoned into a Holy Grail War are, under normal circumstances, assigned to one of the seven standard classes. However, in exceptional cases, there are Servants summoned into classes that fall outside this framework. These exceptional Servants are collectively referred to as Extra Classes.
Among the Extra Classes are roles such as the Ruler, who belongs to no faction and presides over the Holy Grail War as an arbiter from a neutral position, and the Avenger, a class assigned to Servants possessing the disposition of a vengeful spirit. Servants of the Extra Classes often possess highly unusual abilities, and in some cases become the decisive wildcard that influences the overall course of a Holy Grail War.
In fact, during the Third Holy Grail War once held in Fuyuki, the Einzbern faction succeeded in summoning an Avenger-class Servant. Although this Servant was defeated early in the Third Holy Grail War, it is said to have afterward exerted an enormous influence on the ritual foundation of subsequent Holy Grail Wars themselves.

Fuyuki

A regional city in Japan where the Holy Grail War was once held. It is a spiritual land managed by the Tohsaka family, one of the three founding families who created the Holy Grail War. The three founding families selected Fuyuki as the site for the Grail’s descent, thereby initiating the Fuyuki Holy Grail War. The area possesses leylines strong enough to summon the Holy Grail, and since then it has become the stage for numerous conflicts surrounding the Holy Grail and Servants.
“The Fuyuki Holy Grail War” has been fought five times since the ritual’s inception, but viewed as a “ritual to summon the Holy Grail,” it can be said that it was a series of failures. Over the course of its 200-year history, the rules have been established and refined with each successive war, such as the introduction of Command Spells and the dispatch of an Overseer from the Holy Church. However, the Third Holy Grail War, which served as the model for the Snowfield Holy Grail War, was said to have been especially fraught with trouble.
—As an aside, a ghost story involving a certain apartment building has recently been circulating among local students. Perhaps even such rumors are, in some way, connected to the bloody traces of the battles etched into this land.

Einzbern

One of the mage clans known as the “Three Founding Families” who created the Holy Grail War structure. A prestigious lineage of mages skilled in alchemy, their magical system is made possible by the use of homunculi, artificial humans crafted by their techniques.
Their greatest wish is to use the Holy Grail War to achieve the True Magic known as “Heaven’s Feel”— a secret art that materializes the soul and grants immortality. This Magic was once used by the teacher of the mages who built the Einzbern workshops, but was subsequently lost by the Einzberns with the homunculus Justeaze.
When establishing the structure of the Holy Grail War, they provided the vessel necessary for the Holy Grail to descend. Perhaps for that reason, compared to the other two founding families, they have a stronger sense of the Holy Grail as being their own property. Even their involvement in the Snowfield ritual, which was stolen from Fuyuki, was predicted; indeed, a woman believed to be an Einzbern homunculus has been sighted in that city…
